NewsFox

Minor release: NewsFox 1.0.6

NewsFox 1.0.6 is released. This is a very minor release mostly to update for new versions of Firefox and SeaMonkey at addons.mozilla.org.

  • Minor
    • SeaMonkey 2.0 autosubscribe (bug#21963)
    • No JS, XHTML options can be set globally (forum)

Minor release: NewsFox 1.0.5.2.3

NewsFox 1.0.5.2.3 is released. This is a very minor release and won't be released on addons.mozilla.org. The fixes below have been previously released in the bugs specified. This version changes the support to Firefox3.7a1pre and SeaMonkey2.1a1pre.

  • Minor
    • Search keywords not saved as unicode characters (bug#21403)
    • Simple linkifier for article body (bug#21430)

In this version there is a new about:config option newsfox.advanced.linkify with a default value of false. Change it to true for a simple-minded linkifier. The default is false because I am not going to worry about the fine points of a linkifier, and so there are easily constructed links for which this does the wrong thing. Although it should be reasonable in regular usage.

Minor release: NewsFox 1.0.5.2

NewsFox 1.0.5.2 is released. This is a very minor release and won't be released on addons.mozilla.org.

Minor release: NewsFox 1.0.5.1

NewsFox 1.0.5.1 is released. This is a very minor release and won't be released on addons.mozilla.org.

The CSS property onlyInFeeds will be true for feeds that are only in the FEEDS group. So, for example, you can put the lines

treechildren::-moz-tree-cell-text(onlyInFeeds)
	{ color: red !important; }

in your newsfox.css file and feeds that are only in the FEEDS group will appear in red typeface.

See the bugs for more information on the minor changes.

Release: NewsFox 1.0.5

NewsFox 1.0.5 is released.

  • Relative references allowed for NewsFox folder
  • Minor
    • Expanded search option dialog if search is not over all feeds (bug#20506)
    • Sound for new articles (bug#20218)
    • More feed display options (bug#20801, bug#20608)
    • newsfox.advanced.oneGroupOpen
    • newsfox.advanced.dontDeleteFlagged
    • Blank source or XHTML in source
    • newsfox.z.noMainToolbar and newsfox.z.noFeedToolbar (bug#20986)

The folder for NewsFox has been hard coded which creates an annoyance, but not lack of functionality, when using portable Firefox. The annoyance being that the new directory needs to be chosen each time, and in fact if the newsfox directory is not carefully chosen so that it doesn't exist as a non-NewsFox folder on other machines, there could be problems running NewsFox. This version allows relative filenames such as ../../newsfox (. is the current directory and .. is the parent directory) and uses a default of ./ where .=the newsfox folder contained in the profile folder. Hence if you use ./, there should be no problems with portable Firefox. Existing users may wish to change their NewsFox folder to use a relative reference, either in Options > General tab > NewsFox directory or by setting newsfox.global.directory equal to './'. Equivalently, the about:config preference newsfox.global.directory can be reset(removed), which will cause the default to be used.

For sound notification set newsfox.global.notifyUponNewSound equal to true. If the file NFsound.wav exists in the profile directory, it will be played when there are new articles. If the file NFsound.wav does not exist, the system beep will be played.

Two new display options are added: Text (XHTML) and Web (-JS). Previously NewsFox attempted to display items in text view with XHTML. This is no longer possible as Firefox changed how its XML parser works. Also there was a difficulty that some feeds had proper XHTML, but didn't want their pages to be displayed as XHTML, mostly because they used tags with capital letters which are not predefined tags in XHTML as they were in HTML. To display XHTML in text view (for instance in http://ken.coar.org/burrow/index.rss), choose Text (XHTML). The second option allows web view with JavaScript disabled without having to disable it throughout Firefox. See the bugs for more information.

Setting newsfox.advanced.oneGroupOpen equal to true in about:config will only allow one group to be open at a time.

Setting newsfox.advanced.dontDeleteFlagged equal to true in about:config will keep flagged articles from being deleted. This is useful if you wish to select all articles for deletion, but keep the flagged ones.

Release candidate: NewsFox 1.0.5rc2

This will become version 1.0.5 after bug fixes. I expect that this version can be used without any difficulties.

The usual disclaimers apply: this is a beta release so use it with caution on a backup of your Newsfox folder.

The new features (where to look for bugs to fix):

  • Relative references allowed for NewsFox folder
The folder for NewsFox has been hard coded which creates an annoyance, but not lack of functionality, when using portable Firefox. The annoyance being that the new directory needs to be chosen each time, and in fact if the newsfox directory is not carefully chosen so that it doesn't exist as a non-NewsFox folder on other machines, there could be problems running NewsFox. • Expanded search option dialog if search is not over all feeds (bug#20506)
It is now easier to set a search over a collection of feeds that is not a regular group. See the bug for more information.
  • More feed display options (bug#20801, bug#20608)
Two new options are added: Text (XHTML) and Web (-JS). Previously NewsFox attempted to display items in text view with XHTML. • newsfox.advanced.oneGroupOpen
If this about:config preference is set to true, NewsFox will only allow one group to be opened at a time.
  • newsfox.advanced.dontDeleteFlagged
If this about:config preference is set to true, NewsFox will not delete flagged items.
  • Blank source or XHTML in source
Now if a source is set in a feed and it has a blank name, NewsFox uses .... Also if XHTML is in the source name, NewsFox processes it correctly.
  • Sound for new articles (bug#20218)
For sound notification set newsfox.global.notifyUponNewSound equal to true. If the file NFsound.wav exists in the profile directory, it will be played when there are new articles. If the file NFsound.wav does not exist, the system beep will be played.
  • newsfox.z.noMainToolbar and newsfox.z.noFeedToolbar (bug#20986)
NewsFox determines the initial settings of the toolbars from these about:config preferences. Create and set newsfox.z.noMainToolbar equal to true to have no main toolbar.

This will become version 1.0.5 after bug fixes. This will not happen for months due to time constraints/scheduling. I expect that this version can be used without any difficulties.
