Translators wanted

Version 1.0.9 contains 8 new strings. It has been quite a while since we put out a version requiring some translation, so some of our translators are no longer available. We use Babelzilla to facilitate the translation.

If you are willing to do a little translation in one of the following locales, please go to Babelzilla or write me an email if you need more information.

At Babelzilla, you need to create an account and then register as a translator for Newsfox.

Locales needed:

  • Spanish(es-ES)
  • Finnish(fi)
  • French(fr)
  • Armenian(hy-AM)
  • Italian(it)
  • Portuguese(pt-BR)
  • Russian(ru)
  • Turkish(tr)
  • Traditional Chinese(zh-TW)

You're also welcome to do all 367 strings in any locale we don't have.

Beta release: NewsFox 1.0.9rc1

This beta release will become version 1.0.9 after bug fixes. The usual disclaimers apply: this is a beta release so use it with caution on a backup of your Newsfox folder. I have been using this on my real NewsFox folder for several weeks.

The minor changes since beta1 (where to look for bugs to fix):

  • Remove old Newsfox button from palette permanently, rather than only on the first run of Firefox.
  • Uninstall script fixed for newer versions of Firefox.
  • Some error checking on input for number of threads.
  • Shortcuts 'n' and 'p' now function over the entire feed list. (bug#25655)
If anyone has a cogent argument why these shortcuts should function only over the current group(the previous behavior) or over the entire feed list(the new behavior), I am willing to be convinced. "This is the way X does it" is of course not a good argument.

Beta release: NewsFox 1.0.9b1

This beta release will become version 1.0.9 after bug fixes. Always be careful with beta software. In particular, this version changes the feed structure in a small way and changes the buttons in a major way. Regressing to an earlier version shouldn't be a problem, but you have been warned.

The usual disclaimers apply: this is a beta release so use it with caution on a backup of your Newsfox folder. I am using this on my real NewsFox folder.

The new features (where to look for bugs to fix):

  • File output is now mostly asynchronous. (bug#24048)
This may make NewsFox or Firefox more responsive, and it will certainly make the FF developers happier.
  • Feeds are now updated with 2 threads, changeable in about:config. (bug#23933)
The updating now starts newsfox.advanced.checkFeedThreads independent threads to check for updates. When a thread has not responded for newsfox.advanced.renewTimeoutInSeconds seconds, a new thread is started if there are less than the requested number of threads that have been active for less than the renew time. No thread is ever abandoned, so the preference newsfox.advanced.refreshTimeoutInSeconds is not used. If a long running thread returns, there may end up being more than the requested number of threads running. Processing threads requires computing power. The default in this version is 2 threads with a renew time of 10 seconds. I did have it at 3 but that was slow on an old laptop and even makes the system slow to respond on a modern machine. Cancelling and pausing a check can now happen immediately in the GUI as there is no need to wait for the threads to finish.
  • The only NewsFox button available is the former addon-bar button. (bug#25329)
The addon-bar button has been rewritten to be moved anywhere with the FF customize toolbar system. The old button is deprecated and will be removed in the next version. If you don't have an old version of Firefox, the old button should be removed when the new NewsFox version is installed. The program tries to put the new button where the old button was, or leaves it in the addon-bar if the old button was not being used. This doesn't always work, so you may need to add the button from the customize toolbars dialog in Firefox.
The default newsfox.internal.statusBarButtonOrder has been changed from CNM to NCM(left: open NewsFox in a new tab, center: open NewsFox in the current tab, right: autosubscribe and links stuff) as at some point in the past the FF developers decided that addon buttons should behave differently than the home button and open in a new tab. There is a Firefox bug to remove the addon-bar which looks to be happening in FF28. I am happy to entertain CSS suggestions in the bug.
  • Columns in the article pane are now remembered for each feed. (bug#23233)
There is an implicit global setting for all groups which should be established as your previous setting. Changing columns in any group will change this global setting. Each feed can have an overriding list of columns that differ from the global setting. All that can be changed is the presence/absence of columns, they will have the width from the last time they were used. After a feed has its own setting it stays fixed. If the global setting is changed thereafter, a feed with its own setting will see no changes.
  • Mark selected as read/unread is now an option in the context menu of the article pane. (bug#24638)
If you go to the context menu in the article pane, you may now see some subset of two new options: mark selected as read and mark selected as unread. So it is now possible to select some subset of the articles and mark them all as read.
  • Minor
    • Categories with a / in the category are now processed properly. (bug#25412)
Also a bullet is now used as a separator, it is easier to differentiate the categories with a bullet. Categories with a bullet are still processed properly, it will just be difficult to detect the end of a category. Let me know if you find any categories containing a bullet. Internally, NewsFox still uses / to separate categories, real slashes are just encoded.
    • Use .textContent instead of .nodeValue. (bug#24004)
The Firefox documentation seems to indicate that .textContent will process HTML tags and return just the text, but thankfully this does not seem to be the case, at least with xml documents. If it did, we couldn't use it.
    • Links covering multiple lines in source code now open in a new tab. (bug#25622)
    • Narrower spacing in right hand tree in the Feed Options dialog.
I couldn't seem to do this in CSS, so if anyone knows how, that would be better than putting it in via JavaScript.
